Your ideology towards business might be different as being from a different background (assumption) all together and not having a clear idea what business are and for what its meant for. The business is meant for solving peoples problems and making peoples life easier. Research & Development (R&D) is the one that makes it happen making a business is like solving peoples problem that makes hard works or some of the work easier in their life by technology or some kinds of machines making it also a little bit easier works in the markets. Machines are the Future. Our life now have generally become very much easier compared to people living in a stone age, I bet you will agree to the facts that because as human beings we are bound to evolution, we don't stick to the same pattern and find ways to get it done in easier ways.
